Filtering Architecture and Threat Detection Engine

SpamExperts and Barracuda both sit in front of a mailbox and inspect messages before delivery, but the engines behind that inspection are built for different operators. SpamExperts runs on an Intelligent Protection & Filtering Engine that draws on pattern data from a very large volume of domains it processes daily, and it was designed from the outset for hosting companies and ISPs managing filtering for many customer domains at once.

Filtering Architecture and Threat Detection EngineWhat each engine is actually built to catch

SpamExperts’ filtering engine is continuously updated against spam, viruses, ransomware, and phishing patterns pulled from the traffic it processes across a very large base of active domains, and N-able markets this scale as the core differentiator behind its detection accuracy. The engine serves as a first-level defense positioned in front of the destination mail server, which N-able frames as a way to reduce the load on the hosting infrastructure rather than solely as a security layer. Because it was built for the hosting and reseller market, its detection-tuning options, like domain-level allow/block rules, are exposed in bulk-manageable ways suited to an operator running filtering for hundreds of downstream domains rather than a single inbox.

Barracuda’s detection stack relies on its BarracudaONE platform for unified visibility and on Bailey’s explainable AI scoring to provide a security analyst with a stated reason for each verdict, alongside real-time reporting and forensics to investigate a specific threat after the fact. Barracuda also integrates user-reported phishing directly into its response workflow. Hence, a flagged message from an employee’s report folder feeds back into the detection loop rather than sitting in a separate ticketing system. This design assumes an internal security or IT team actively reviewing verdicts, which is a different operating assumption than SpamExperts’ bulk-filtering model built for resellers managing many tenants at once.

Where the two engines diverge in a buyer’s decision

The practical difference shows up in who is meant to operate the console day to day. SpamExperts’ multitenant web interface with predefined settings, reporting, and views is explicitly built so a hosting provider or MSP can apply a consistent filtering policy across many customer domains without configuring each one individually, a workflow that Barracuda’s Integrated Email Protection does not center its interface around in the same way. Barracuda instead optimizes for a single tenant’s security operations, with its explainable AI reasoning and forensics view aimed at helping a single internal team investigate and tune detection for their organization.

Neither engine publishes a directly comparable, independently audited catch-rate figure. Hence, a head-to-head accuracy claim beyond each vendor’s own marketing isn’t something this post can verify and state as fact. What is verifiable is the operating model each engine assumes: bulk, multi-domain filtering for SpamExperts versus single-tenant, analyst-facing detection for Barracuda, and that distinction should drive the decision more than either vendor’s own performance claims.

Deployment Models: Cloud, On-Premises, and Multi-Tenant Support

Deployment flexibility affects both onboarding time and who ultimately manages the filter in the long term. SpamExperts is available as a redundant cloud deployment or an on-premises installation, giving buyers a genuine choice rather than a cloud-only mandate. Barracuda’s Email Security Gateway historically shipped as a physical or virtual appliance and has since added a Cloud Protection Layer (CPL) that extends the appliance’s policy engine into a cloud-managed component, meaning a Barracuda deployment often ends up as a hybrid rather than a clean single-model choice.

Cloud-first versus appliance-plus-cloud

SpamExperts’ cloud deployment requires no hardware to purchase or maintain and is positioned by N-able as the faster path to protection. At the same time, the on-premises option is available for organizations with data residency or infrastructure requirements that rule out a pure SaaS model. Because both paths run the same underlying filtering engine, a buyer isn’t trading away detection capability by choosing on-premises; the choice is about infrastructure control, not protection tier.

Barracuda’s model is built around its Email Security Gateway appliance extended by the Cloud Protection Layer, and several of its more advanced authentication features, DMARC verification among them, are documented as CPL-only capabilities that require contacting Barracuda support to enable rather than being available by default on the base appliance. That’s a meaningful distinction for a buyer comparing the two: SpamExperts’ feature set is largely available out of the box in either deployment mode, whereas some of Barracuda’s authentication capabilities require an additional enablement step.

Multi-tenant operation for hosts and MSPs

SpamExperts’ interface was built around multi-tenant operation from the ground up, letting a single operator apply and adjust policy across many downstream customer domains through one console, a natural fit for the web-hosting companies and ISPs/telcos N-able names as its core audience. Barracuda’s BarracudaONE platform does provide single-pane visibility. Still, its design center is a single organization’s security posture rather than reseller-style management of many independent customer domains, and its published feature set does not foreground the kind of bulk domain administration SpamExperts is built around.

Outbound Filtering and Sender Reputation Protection

Inbound protection gets most of the attention in a comparison like this. Still, outbound filtering protects a domain’s sending reputation, and the two products handle it differently enough to matter. SpamExperts ships a dedicated outgoing email filter alongside its inbound product, explicitly designed to protect sender reputation and prevent outbound abuse that can get an IP or domain blacklisted. Barracuda’s outbound protection is less centrally documented as a standalone product and is more commonly discussed in the context of its appliance’s mail-relay behavior.

SpamExperts’ abuse-management layer

SpamExperts includes abuse management specifically designed to help a hosting provider avoid IP blacklisting and maintain reliable email delivery. This matters most for an operator sending on behalf of many customer domains from shared infrastructure: a single compromised account can otherwise damage deliverability for every domain sharing that IP range. N-able positions the outgoing filter as giving visibility and policy enforcement over outbound flow, specifically to prevent that kind of reputation damage before it spreads.

A documented alignment gap in Barracuda’s outbound relay

Independent configuration documentation notes a specific limitation worth flagging here: by default, Barracuda Email Security sets outgoing mail to use one of Barracuda’s own domains for the return-path address, and that domain does not pass SPF alignment; Barracuda’s outbound relay currently provides no mechanism to make SPF alignment pass through it. The practical workaround documented by that same source is to rely on DKIM alignment instead, since DMARC only requires one of SPF or DKIM to align, not both. This is a structural detail specific to how Barracuda’s relay is configured, not a claim about the overall quality of email security. Any organization deploying Barracuda for outbound mail should confirm that DKIM is correctly configured rather than assuming SPF alignment will pass by default.

Domain Authentication: SPF, DKIM, and DMARC Handling

Both products support the three standard authentication protocols, Sender Policy Framework (SPF), DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM), and Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance (DMARC), but they differ in how deep that support goes and what’s available without extra setup steps.

SpamExperts’ authentication and reporting

SpamExperts supports DMARC aggregate reporting, which details the authentication status of messages sent on behalf of a domain and shows which messages are authenticating against DKIM versus SPF. The product also allows DMARC check exceptions to be configured at the IP level, giving an administrator granular control over which sending sources are exempt from DMARC enforcement, which is useful when a legitimate but misconfigured internal sender would otherwise be blocked. This level of per-IP exception handling is aimed squarely at operators managing authentication policy across many domains rather than a single organization tuning one domain’s records.

Barracuda’s authentication and domain-fraud tooling

Barracuda’s DMARC enforcement blocks unauthorized senders outright and pairs that with SPF and DKIM validation to verify sender authenticity, plus reporting built specifically to support domain-fraud investigation, showing which IPs are passing or failing DMARC, where domain misalignment is occurring, and providing samples of spoofing attempts against the domain. Barracuda also helps customers correctly configure SPF and DKIM and troubleshoot common misconfiguration issues, such as domain misalignment, providing a meaningful support layer for a team that doesn’t have deep in-house DNS authentication expertise. As noted above, DMARC verification requires the Cloud Protection Layer and direct contact with Barracuda support to enable it on the Email Security Gateway, so it isn’t necessarily a default-on capability, unlike SpamExperts’ DMARC reporting.

Targeted Attack Protection: Phishing, Spoofing, and Executive Impersonation

Generic spam filtering catches volume attacks; targeted attacks against specific people require purpose-built rules, and both vendors have invested in this area, targeting slightly different attack patterns.

SpamExperts' identity-locking and high-value-target rulesSpamExperts’ identity-locking and high-value-target rules

SpamExperts has released filtering rules specifically designed to enhance protection for high-value email addresses, CEOs, CFOs, and finance teams, which are the typical targets for social-engineering attacks that use a spoofed display name to impersonate an executive. The product also supports identity-locking rules on the outbound side to prevent spam and other unwanted email behaviors associated with a specific sending identity. On the attachment side, SpamExperts added the ability to block attachments containing macros specifically to help prevent zero-day attacks delivered through macro-enabled documents, a common vector for both phishing payloads and ransomware.

Barracuda’s brand impersonation and forensics tooling

Barracuda’s domain-fraud protection is built to prevent third parties from maliciously spoofing a domain to target not just employees but also customers and external partners who trust the brand. The company explicitly frames its phishing defenses as scaled to protect all employees equally, rather than concentrating protection only on flagged high-risk individuals. Barracuda’s real-time reporting and forensics tooling supports investigating a targeted attack after the fact, and its user-reported phishing integration means an employee who flags a suspicious message feeds that signal directly back into the detection system rather than into a separate manual review queue.

Archiving, Compliance, and Data Retention

Email archiving matters for legal holds, compliance audits, and simple business continuity when a mailbox is compromised or deleted, and the two products take different approaches to what’s included.

SpamExperts’ built-in archiving

SpamExperts includes robust encrypted email archiving as part of its core product line, helping prevent data loss and support legal compliance requirements without requiring a separate archiving purchase. Because the archive sits alongside the same filtering engine that processes inbound and outbound mail, messages can be captured and retained as they pass through the filter, eliminating the need for a separate ingestion pipeline and simplifying the compliance story for an operator who wants filtering and retention handled by one vendor rather than two.

Barracuda’s data-protection scope

Barracuda’s broader Integrated Email Protection suite includes data protection and cloud backup specifically for Microsoft 365 workloads, Exchange Online mailboxes, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, Planner, Teams, and Entra ID, with fast, point-in-time recovery in the event of accidental or malicious deletion. This is a broader scope than email archiving alone, covering collaboration data beyond the inbox. Still, it’s also scoped specifically to Microsoft 365 environments rather than functioning as a platform-agnostic archive, as SpamExperts’ archiving does. An organization not standardized on Microsoft 365 for its collaboration stack wouldn’t get the same breadth of coverage from Barracuda’s backup layer.

Administration, Reporting, and Visibility

Day-to-day administration is where the difference between a reseller-oriented tool and a single-tenant security console becomes most visible to whoever actually logs in every day.

SpamExperts' operator-facing consoleSpamExperts’ operator-facing console

SpamExperts’ web interface ships with predefined settings, reporting, and views designed to give an operator control and visibility over email flows across many managed domains at once. Recent release notes show the interface being actively extended, for example, adding the ability to blacklist a sender and remove a message, including quarantined messages, directly from the log search page without navigating to a separate screen. Branded MX hostname configuration is also supported, letting a reseller present the filtering service under its own domain rather than SpamExperts’ default hostname, which matters for a hosting provider maintaining its own brand in front of customers.

Barracuda’s unified single-pane view

Barracuda’s BarracudaONE platform is built around single-pane visibility and control across its product set, unified with Microsoft’s own quarantine so an administrator isn’t switching between Barracuda’s console and the native Microsoft 365 admin center to manage held messages. Barracuda also provides value reporting that shows protection status before, during, and after delivery, which gives a security team a way to demonstrate the product’s impact to stakeholders outside the IT department, a reporting angle that SpamExperts’ documentation doesn’t emphasize in the same way.

Integration with Microsoft 365 and Existing Mail Infrastructure

How cleanly a filter integrates with an organization’s existing mail platform affects both setup time and the amount of duplicate tooling that ends up in place.

SpamExperts’ platform-agnostic positioning

SpamExperts is documented as integrating with a range of control panels commonly used by hosting providers, and its positioning as a first-level filter running in front of the destination mail server means it’s built to work ahead of whatever mail platform sits behind it, rather than being tied specifically to any one email provider. This platform-agnostic design fits its core hosting and ISP audience, who filter mail on behalf of customers running many different backend mail systems rather than a single standardized platform.

Barracuda’s Microsoft-native integration

Barracuda’s quarantine unification with Microsoft is a specific, named integration point: inbound-flagged messages held by Barracuda are managed via a workflow unified with Microsoft’s native quarantine, rather than a fully separate Barracuda-only queue. Combined with its Microsoft 365 backup coverage for Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Planner, Teams, and Entra ID, Barracuda’s Integrated Email Protection suite is clearly built with Microsoft 365 as the primary target environment. An organization already standardized on Microsoft 365 gets a more tightly woven experience with Barracuda than with a platform-agnostic filter, while an organization running a mixed or non-Microsoft mail environment doesn’t get the same level of integration with Barracuda as it would with a filter built to sit in front of any backend.

Plan Structure and Contract Flexibility

Neither vendor publishes pricing that this post can state as fact without risking it going stale, so the meaningful comparison is structural: how each vendor packages tiers, what’s bundled at each level, and how contracts are structured.

How SpamExperts packages its offering

SpamExperts is sold as separate inbound and outbound filtering products, each with its own data sheet, and archiving is included in the broader SpamExperts service line. Because N-able resells SpamExperts to hosting providers and MSPs as a wholesale or per-domain offering rather than a flat per-seat SaaS subscription, contract structure tends to follow domain or mailbox volume rather than a fixed per-user monthly commitment, a structure suited to a reseller managing filtering across many downstream customer domains rather than a single company buying seats for its own staff.

How Barracuda packages its offering

Barracuda’s Integrated Email Protection is positioned as a suite spanning email security, domain-fraud protection, security awareness training, and Microsoft 365 backup, which suggests a tiered structure where more advanced capabilities, including CPL-dependent features like DMARC verification, may sit above a base tier rather than being included by default, consistent with the documented requirement to contact Barracuda support to enable DMARC on the Email Security Gateway. Barracuda’s appliance-plus-cloud model also means a buyer evaluating contract terms should confirm whether appliance licensing, CPL access, and the backup add-on are bundled together or priced as separate line items, since the suite spans distinct product areas rather than a single flat tier.

Scalability for MSPs, Resellers, and Growing Businesses

The clearest dividing line between these two products is who they were built to scale for.

SpamExperts at reseller and MSP scaleSpamExperts at reseller and MSP scale

SpamExperts is marketed directly at web-hosting companies, MSPs, and ISPs/telcos looking to strengthen email protection across their customer base, and its multi-tenant interface, bulk domain management, and branded MX hostname support are all features that only matter at that scale. Mandatory two-factor authentication was rolled out across all user types on SpamExperts Hosted Cloud, reflecting a security posture focused on protecting an operator’s console that many downstream administrators may access, not just a single company’s own IT team.

Barracuda at single-organization scale

Barracuda’s Integrated Email Protection is built around a single organization’s security operations, a single BarracudaONE console, a single Microsoft 365 tenant’s quarantine, and a single team reviewing Bailey’s explainable AI verdicts. That’s not a limitation so much as a different design center: a growing business that is itself the end customer, rather than a reseller managing filtering on behalf of many separate end customers, is a clearer fit for Barracuda. A hosting provider or MSP evaluating both products for resale to its own customer base would find SpamExperts’ architecture much closer to what that business model requires.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SpamExperts or Barracuda handle DMARC enforcement better out of the box?

SpamExperts includes DMARC aggregate reporting as part of its core product and can configure DMARC check exceptions at the IP level for granular control across multiple domains. Barracuda’s DMARC enforcement is available through its Cloud Protection Layer. Still, that layer requires direct contact with Barracuda Networks Technical Support to enable it on the Email Security Gateway; it isn’t necessarily active by default in every deployment. If DMARC needs to be live immediately without an extra enablement step, SpamExperts’ documented default-on reporting is the more straightforward path. However, both products support the underlying protocol once configured.

Can either product be deployed on-premises instead of the cloud?

Yes, for SpamExperts, it’s documented as deployable in a redundant cloud environment or on-premises, using the same underlying filtering engine either way, so the choice doesn’t trade away detection capability. Barracuda’s model centers on a physical or virtual Email Security Gateway appliance, which is itself a form of on-premises deployment, extended by the cloud-based Cloud Protection Layer for additional capabilities. Barracuda’s architecture is effectively hybrid by design, rather than offering a clean either/or choice, as SpamExperts does between pure cloud and pure on-premises.

Which product is built for hosting companies and MSPs managing many customer domains?

SpamExperts is marketed directly to web-hosting companies, MSPs, and ISPs/telcos, with a multi-tenant web interface, predefined settings, and branded MX hostname support, built specifically for operators managing filtering across many separate customer domains from a single console. Barracuda’s BarracudaONE platform provides single-pane visibility, but its design centers on a single organization’s security operations rather than reseller-style administration of many independent tenant domains. A hosting provider or MSP evaluating both for resale would find SpamExperts’ feature set more directly aligned to that operating model.

Does Barracuda’s outbound relay have any documented authentication limitations?

Yes. Independent DNS configuration documentation notes that Barracuda Email Security’s outbound relay sets the return-path address to one of Barracuda’s own domains by default, and that this domain does not pass SPF alignment. There is currently no mechanism via this outbound path to ensure an SPF alignment pass. The documented workaround is to ensure DKIM is correctly configured and aligned, since DMARC only requires SPF or DKIM, not both. Any organization routing outbound mail through Barracuda should verify DKIM alignment specifically rather than assuming SPF will cover it.

Does SpamExperts include email archiving, or is that a separate purchase?

SpamExperts includes robust, encrypted email archiving as part of its core service line, helping prevent data loss and support legal compliance without requiring a separate archiving product. Because the archive captures mail as it passes through the same filtering engine that handles inbound and outbound traffic, retention doesn’t require a separate ingestion pipeline or a vendor relationship. This is a structural difference from Barracuda, whose data-protection layer is scoped specifically to Microsoft 365 backup rather than platform-agnostic email archiving.

Does Barracuda protect Microsoft 365 data beyond just the inbox?

Yes. Barracuda’s Integrated Email Protection suite includes data protection and cloud backup covering Exchange Online mailboxes, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, Planner, Teams, and Entra ID, with point-in-time recovery in the event of accidental or malicious deletion. This is broader than email-only archiving, covering collaboration and identity data across the Microsoft 365 stack. That breadth is specific to Microsoft 365 environments, though, so an organization running a different or mixed collaboration platform wouldn’t get equivalent coverage from this part of Barracuda’s suite.

Which product offers stronger protection against executive impersonation and spear-phishing?

SpamExperts has released filtering rules specifically targeting high-value addresses, such as CEOs, CFOs, and finance teams, to counter display-name spoofing tactics commonly used in executive-impersonation attacks. Barracuda’s domain-fraud protection takes a broader approach, framing its defenses as scaled to protect all employees equally rather than concentrating protection on a flagged high-risk list, and pairs that with forensics tooling to investigate spoofing samples after an incident. The better fit depends on whether the priority is targeted rules for named high-value accounts or uniform coverage across the whole organization.

Does either vendor publish an independently verified spam-catch rate?

Neither vendor’s public documentation includes a directly comparable, independently audited catch-rate figure that this post can state as fact. Therefore, a head-to-head accuracy number isn’t something a comparison can responsibly claim for either side. What is documented and verifiable is each engine’s underlying data source: SpamExperts draws on pattern data from a very large volume of domains it processes daily, while Barracuda relies on its Bailey explainable AI model for plain-language verdict reasoning. Evaluating either product against your own mail traffic during a trial is the only way to get a catch-rate figure specific to your environment.

Can I use macro-blocking to stop zero-day attachment attacks with either product?

SpamExperts documents a specific attachment-restriction feature that blocks attachments containing macros, designed to help prevent zero-day attacks delivered via macro-enabled documents, a common vector for both phishing payloads and ransomware. Barracuda’s published feature documentation does not specify an equivalent standalone macro-blocking capability, though its broader malware and attachment-scanning features may cover similar attack patterns through other detection methods. If macro-based attachment attacks are a specific concern, confirm the exact mechanism with whichever vendor you’re evaluating rather than assuming equivalent coverage.

Which product requires fewer support tickets to get DMARC and outbound authentication fully working?

Based on each vendor’s documentation, SpamExperts’ DMARC aggregate reporting and per-IP exception handling are part of the core product, with no documented separate enablement request. Barracuda’s DMARC verification is explicitly gated behind the Cloud Protection Layer and requires contacting Barracuda Networks Technical Support directly to enable it. Its outbound relay also has a documented SPF alignment gap that requires manually confirming the DKIM configuration as a workaround. For a team that wants authentication to work with the fewest extra configuration steps, SpamExperts’ documented defaults require less coordination with vendor support for full deployment.

Glossary

SPF (Sender Policy Framework): A DNS record that specifies which mail servers are authorized to send email on behalf of a domain, used by receiving servers to detect forged sending addresses.

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail): A cryptographic signature added to outgoing email that lets a receiving server verify the message content wasn’t altered in transit and confirms it came from an authorized sender for the domain.

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance): A policy layered on top of SPF and DKIM that tells receiving servers what to do with a message that fails authentication and provides reporting of authentication results back to the sending domain.

SPF/DKIM alignment: The requirement that the domain used in SPF or DKIM authentication match the domain shown to the recipient in the “From” address, which DMARC checks before a message is considered to pass.

Multi-tenant console: An administrative interface that lets one operator manage security policy for many separate customer domains or organizations from a single login, common in hosting-provider and MSP tools.

Cloud Protection Layer (CPL): Barracuda’s cloud-based extension to its Email Security Gateway appliance, used to deliver additional capabilities, including DMARC verification, beyond the base appliance.

Explainable AI: A detection model designed to surface a plain-language reason for its verdict on a given message, rather than only a pass/fail score, intended to help a human analyst understand and trust the decision.

Return-path address: The address a receiving mail server uses for bounce and delivery-failure notifications, which is also the address checked during SPF authentication, distinct from the visible “From” address.

Abuse management: A set of controls and monitoring aimed at detecting and stopping outbound spam or malicious mail sent through a provider’s infrastructure, used to protect shared sending-IP reputation.
